“It is the juxtaposition of girl-child and sex-child, of lunch boxes and condoms sharing a logo of Sanrio characters, of sadomasochistic bondage and cute goods featured and advertised within the same magazine, that generates a deep and variable pool of meanings given the shōjo and her evolving girl culture.”

What does Honolulu need? More blogs. That’s why I’m starting a new venture that will offer comprehensive coverage on local arts and culture (and science, humor, language, books, theater, film, and technology)! If Lei Chic is daily candy for Honolulu, Culture Bomb is the brainfood. Or fart jokes. They’re not mutually exclusive.

Beyoncé, No! — a list of good musicians from Texas that doesn’t include a Knowles sister. Just hit the giddy up button (that’s Texan for shuffle)

God, I Hate Bukowski

Bukowski resembles that arrogant breed of lazy, phony poets who think they’re poignant for putting a bunch of boring words together that look good through a bottle of booze. “then I got tired of/it all/and decided to/leave./I walked out to the/parking lot and/the car was/gone./the bitch had/taken the/car./I had to get a/cab.” Just fucking kill me already. Read it out loud. You sound like a melodramatic amateur. It’s not even minimalist. Carver, that was a guy who could do something with regular words; he could give a meaning to the sound of pen on paper.

"My wife is in the other half of this mobile home

making a case against me.

I can hear her pen scratch, scratch.

Now and then she stops to weep,

then—scratch, scratch.

The frost is going out of the ground.

The man who owns this unit tells me,

Don’t leave your car here.

My wife goes on writing and weeping,

weeping and writing in our new kitchen.”

I fell so bad for the naive kid who finishes a Bukowski, closes the book and goes, “That is soooo deep.”

(“The Other Life,” by Raymond Carver, from Fires)

I was finally about to go to bed until Meyerowitz had to go and be interesting for 7 mins.
